Tele-med Access System

Telemedicine is an interactive program to make health care for illness ready available for your child which uses a video camera to send live images to doctors at their office or hospital. . They work with one of our trained staff persons by examining a child much like they do in person. Other cameras allow the provider to examine your child's ears and throat and an electronic stethoscope can listen to a child's heart and lungs. The staff and our older children can see and talk directly to the medical provider. At this time an evaluation and recommendation will be made.
If your doctor is not yet a participant, your child can be evaluated, with your permission, by an existing provider, then relay the information to his or her office. The cost is the co-pay your hospitalization requires for an office visit.
Other benefits of Tele-med:
- Allow a provider to check your child to be sure it's OK to return after an illness.
- Allow your child to stay at Small World if treatment can be started immediately.
- Allow you to avoid unplanned visits to a doctor's office, after-hours clinic, or the ED.
- Make sure a prescription is waiting for you at your pharmacy or have it delivered to you
- Provide records (including pictures) of an illness evaluation to your pediatrician if he/she is not yet a provider.

Automated External Defibrillator:
When a heart quits beating or is beating irregularly, this device uses electronic shocks to stimulate the heart to beat in normal rhythm again. It takes the place of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Pre-recorded prompts are given so there is no question about the procedure. Various size paddles and lowering of voltage make this device safe for use not only on adults, but on children who are at least one year old.

FUN TO BE FIT: A FIT MIND IN A FIT BODY
All learning is an offshoot of activities that are safe, engage the curiosity of young children, and include something for the interests of everyone in the group, including some way off the beaten track! This gives them inspiration and confidence to invent their own activities and not rely on the latest must-have manufactured items.
Fit body: Besides the usual activities, enticing games like Sharks in the Water, Cat and Mouse, and Showtime delight the children with their whimsical rules.
Fit Mind: The children take pride in their own garden and compost pile. They built a sundial, birdhouse, and bird feeders. They hike through the nearby wetlands area to view and collect nature specimens.
Past favorites included: using a potato to conduct electricity, experimenting with yeast, making paper, dissecting a plastic frog, having their own presidential election, and making crystals. They loved classic books including: Nancy Drew, Charlotte's Web, and more... Gizmos and Gadgets helped us make a water clock and a catapult.
Don't you wish your early education was this exciting?

What safety systems do you have to protect the safety of my child?
- Our external surveillance cameras monitor and record each of our outdoor areas 24 hours a day. Our classroom cameras monitor but do not record. The monitor is secured in the Director’s office.
- Each parent is issued an access card to enter the building.
- When an unauthorized person is needed to pick up a child, the parent notifies the office of his/her name and phone number. They ring the doorbell and identify themselves, are let in, show identification, and sign in and out.
- Every delivery person and visitor is met at the door and escorted while inside the building.
- Our access system allows us to do an instant lock-down of the building.
- The Penfield Fire Department, which answers emergencies, has a master key which unlocks the lockbox at the main entrance
What if my child doesn't have a complete outdoor outfit at the center?
We will remind you to bring the missing item to school. We do have some spares, but know that you will want to dress your child in his/her personal clothing.
What if I ask that my child stays indoors today?
We usually have to say no. We would like to individualize, but staff-child ratios rarely allow us to do this.
Do you ever make exceptions to your going outside policies?
We never say never. Because the office monitors staffing and attendance numbers:
PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE WITH YOUR REQUEST. DO NOT ASK A CAREGIVER. If you definitely think your child is not well enough to go outside, call before you bring him/her.
